A hand tool used to file away the surface of metal.

Engineering Structures and Mechanisms Core Module 1

Finishing

Applying stain and nitrocellulose lacquer to a completed project.

General Wood Core Module 2

First aid

First aid is the immediate care of a person who has been injured or has suddenly taken ill. It is intended to prevent death or further illness and injury and to relieve pain until medical aid can be obtained.

General Wood Core Module 1

G-clamp, G-cramp or sash clamp

Used for clamping material to a bench so it can be safely worked or for clamping work during assembly.

Technology Mandatory
General Wood Core Module 1

Hacksaw

A special saw used to cut metal. It consists of a frame and thin blade.

Engineering Structures and Mechanisms Core Module 1

Hazard

A hazard in relation to a person is defined as anything that may result in injury to a person or harm to the health of a person.

General

Hazards

Anything that may threaten the safety of those nearby and may include:

  • fire and/or flammable materials
  • gases
  • electricity
  • fumes
  • slippery surfaces
  • sharp metal edges
  • smoke
  • chemicals

General Wood Core Module 2

Heavy bleeding

General Wood Core Module 1

Industrial deafness

The permanent loss of hearing caused by exposure to industrial noise in a worker's employment.

Wood Machining Specialised Module 3

Jack plane

A hand tool used for planing and smoothing timber. There are other types depending on their size and use such as block plane, smoothing plane and trying plane.

Technology Mandatory
General Wood Core Module 1

Legislative Acts

An Act of Parliament which must be implemented by an authority such as WorkCover NSW.

Cabinetwork Specialised Module 3

Medium density fibre board (MDF)

Medium Density Fibre Board (MDF) is made primarily from plantation grown Radiata pine, though it can be successfully made from almost any wood. Recycled paper, recycled scrap wood, bamboo and materials such as carbon fibres, polymers, steel and glass have all successfully been used in its manufacture. MDF is able to utilise young forest thinnings and sawmill off-cuts that would normally be of only limited value.

Cabinetwork Specialised Module 3

Mission statement

The task or tasks that the organisation or individuals feels is necessary in order to realise the vision.

General Wood Core Module 1
Wood Machining Specialised Module 3

Precautionary steps

Actions that are taken prior to starting work which may prevent an accident from happening.

General Wood Core Module 2

Psychological hazards

Hazards in this area often arise from poor relations or communications between people, for example management, fellow workers or clients, and the affected employee ultimately finds themselves in a stressful situation.

Wood Machining Specialised Module 3

Risk

Risk, in relation to any injury and harm, is defined as the probability of that injury or harm occurring.

General

Routing

Using a router to machine a moulding.

Wood Machining Specialised Module 3

Safe system of work

This minimises the risk of employees and others from being injured or harmed by the work activity. To achieve this required level of safety, the employer must:

  • Consider current technical standards and approved codes of practice.
  • Systematically identify all hazards in the workplace.
  • Determine which of the identified hazards are significant.

Take all practical steps to eliminate or at least minimise the risk of injury or harm from the hazard through isolation, replacement, administrative or engineering means, or the provision of personal protective equipment (PPE).

General

Safe working practices

Using a variety of practices in a technology area that will reduce or eliminate the possibility of an accident occurring.
