Technology KLA

Agricultural technology

Agricultural Technology is an elective 100 or 200-hour course that enables students to develop an understanding of environmental, social and economic factors affecting the Australian agricultural industry. It focuses on the interactions, development and management of sustainable and marketable plant and animal enterprises.

The Stage 5 Agricultural Technology course builds upon the knowledge, skills and experiences developed in mandatory technology education from kindergarten to Year 8 through the K-6 Science and Technology syllabus and the Technology (Mandatory) Years 7-8 syllabus. Students may focus further on this subject matter in Years 11-12 through subjects such as: Agriculture, Primary Industries VET, Design and Technology, Technological and Applied Studies Life Skills.

In the 200-hour course students will focus on a minimum of four agricultural enterprises. Students will be engaged for at least 50% of course time in a variety of practical experiences to produce sustainable and marketable plant and animal products. The students will work collaboratively to make environmentally and socially responsible management decisions that solve problems for their enterprise. The Board of Studies NSW Years 7-10 Syllabus Course Descriptors document provides a more detailed course description, including School Certificate requirements.

The Agricultural Technology Years 7-10 syllabus and support materials are available on the Board of Studies NSW web site.

The Animals in Schools web site assists schools to satisfy the requirements of the Animal Research Act 1985 (NSW) and the Australian code of practice for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes.
